WHY BUILDINGS MUST BE ANALYZED FOR SEISMIC RESISTANCE???

Analysis is very important before starting construction work. The resulting structural analysis can provide details of foundation sizes, column and beam sizes, and even details of reinforcement sufficient to carry the loads acting on the structure. Not only that, that in building any construction, several documents are needed such as plans, elevations, and details of each structural element.

So, the essence of structural analysis is a process to determine the load that can be carried by the structure safely without experiencing structural failure. However, the most important thing in structural analysis is how to convince yourself that before building the strength aspects of the structure are needed so that life safety is a priority, meaning that the resulting structure can deform properly without experiencing “Structure Collapse”. The most important thing is also the correct and rigorous analysis results by taking into account the very dangerous lateral loads such as unexpected earthquake loads and even strong wind loads that sometimes hit the building suddenly. From the results of these calculations, a cost-effective, lean and strong analysis can be produced.

Buildings that are not properly structurally analyzed can suffer great losses by producing buildings that are wasteful so that the costs incurred are very high. So, it is very appropriate before building, a rigorous structural analysis is carried out. Structural analysis is the main key to knowing the behavior of the structure due to the given loading combination, with the analysis it can also be known the maximum load that can be carried by the structure so that the structure can be strong, sturdy, and not experience collapse. In addition, it will be able to guarantee that the displacement and deformation remain within the permissible limits.

Furthermore, in analysis, the terms linear and nonlinear analysis are known. Generally, the structure is carried out as a linear analysis for ordinary loads. However, when there are extraordinary loads, a nonlinear analysis is considered. The extraordinary actions are like earthquake loads so nonlinear segments are considered. If the structure is allowed to move in the linear zone, even for extraordinary loads such as earthquake loads, then we have to increase the structural stiffness, but at the cost of additional construction. If we try to maintain the structure in the linear range during extraordinary loads (earthquake loads), then the analyzer must be careful with the resulting analysis. On the contrary, if we consider nonlinear analysis, it means that failure of the structure is included. However, if we consider a linear analysis, the force will be given for the applied load without any indication of failure. So, the analyzer should seriously observe it.

In analyzing the structure, we need the name “Structure Software” because manual analysis cannot be done carefully and thoroughly. The software needed in structural analysis is Sap2000, Etabs, StaadPro, Midas, and other programs that have been tested and are more popular in the industrial world.
